Language Arts
The Language Arts major builds on the Elementary Teacher Certification program with its focus on all forms of communication—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and visually representing. With courses coming out of both the English and Theatre and Speech Communication programs, students gain a solid background in “teaching as a performing art.” There is a major focus on teaching across the curriculum supported by these integrated language arts and their connection to Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences: linguistic intelligence, musical intelligence, logical-mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, body and kinesthetic intelligence, intrapersonal intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, naturalist intelligence, existential intelligence and spiritual intelligence.
 | The Capstone Experience – Along with student teaching, Language Arts majors complete a senior project. Students select from a number of challenging options, the most popular being the creation of a body of Language Arts learning centers/games that can be used in their classrooms. |
