About Erin
Hired as Assistant Professor of Photography and Digital Media in August 2012, Erin Zerbe has some big ideas for the SHU Art Department. She plans to develop some new courses in digital media, including video, animation, web and interactive media. She and fellow SHU art professor Timothy VanBeke are working on a new technique referred to as "sound art," which is a relatively new art form that, instead of stimulating the eyes, uses music, produced sounds and sound technology to generate an artistic aural experience.

An accomplished artist herself, Zerbe is actively showing work in Florence, Italy. In Dublin, Ireland, she had her biennial art exhibition.

Zerbe uses different materials in her work, but the subject matter is consistent.

“My work explores the body and its relationship to fatness, sexuality and body policing," she said. "Calling into question what is abject about fatness, I put the grotesque on display in a way that makes mention of the unrealistic standards set forth by hegemonic society, and how being fat can be a rejection of this pressure to conform.”

Zerbe received her BFA in Communication Arts and Design in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University, and in 2011 obtained her Master of Fine Art Degree with focuses in Photographic and Electronic Media from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Zerbe has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Virginia Commonwealth University.
