"I believe that teaching within the social work discipline begins with guiding students through the process of self-exploration which helps them to identify and cultivate strengths and talents while also acknowledging and addressing challenges and limitations. The classroom should also inspire students to explore, examine, and think critically about values, ideas, opinions, and facts that are presented from multiple sources. My role is to serve as a guide in the learning process by fostering various modes of interaction and the sharing of knowledge. I enter the classroom aware of the personal knowledge and experience that is present which enriches the course material and develop opportunities for students to share. I strongly believe that I should not only ignite the students’ interest in life-long learning and investigation but also challenge them to think critically about information that is given and received. In addition, my teaching foundation is built upon utilizing multiple teaching methods that address the various learning styles of each student. Lastly, I provide students with opportunities to apply class concepts and theories to real-life situations of the social work profession. I believe that it is essential for students to engage in the social work field, working directly with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities."
