Inaugural Chili Bowl Sept. 30

Siena Heights University will host the inaugural Chili Bowl, a chili cook-off competition that will raise funds for community children in need and fight area hunger. The event is scheduled for Sept. 30 before SHU’s home football game against Missouri Baptist.

Co-sponsored by SHU, SHU Dining and Goodwill Industries, the event will feature up to 10 teams competing for the Chili Bowl title. Winners will receive a trophy and a prize. For a donation, community members can sample the chili and then vote for their favorite. Donations of children’s hats, gloves, scarves and coats will also be accepted during the event.

“Hunger impacts a child’s ability to learn as well as their attendance, attention and behavior at school,” said SHU Dining Director Michael Miller. “Community support of the first SHU Chili Bowl will help support the educational process and student success. SHU Dining/Chartwells is pleased to a partner with Siena Heights University and Goodwill in this worthy event.”

“Our Lenawee County community has hundreds of children in need,” Goodwill Director of Program Operations Nathan Salazar. “The Chili Bowl is a great way to raise awareness and bring the community together to help fight a serious issue that impacts the development of our children. We look forward to this partnership for years to come.”

Funds raised from the event will be used to purchase backpacks filled with food items to distribute to area school-age children in need. The goal is to raise $3,500, which will fund approximately 20 backpacks per week through the 2017-18 school year.

Teams of up to four people from the community are encouraged to enter the competition, and there is a $25 entry fee per team. Teams will be asked to prepare at least three gallons of chili. However, all meat, a basic pantry of ingredients, as well as cooking utensils, will be provided.

The cook-off will begin at 9 a.m. outside the University Center on the Adrian campus, with the competition beginning at 11 a.m. The winner will be announced at approximately 12:15 p.m. before the 1 p.m. kickoff of the football game.

All remaining chili from the event will be donated to local food banks.
