Siena Heights University Announces 2019 Alumni Award Winners

Siena Heights University announced its 2019 Alumni Award winners. This year’s recipients will be honored Oct. 11 during Homecoming Weekend.

Receiving the Sister Ann Joachim Award is Melissa Sissen (class of 1977), of Adrian, Mich. Sissen has worked in the SHU Library for more than 30 years as an associate professor of Library Science and currently serves as reference and public services librarian. The Sister Melissa SissenAnn Joachim Award recognizes significant contributions to the University and/or community through activities that demonstrate strong leadership and the capacity to confront issues head on while maintaining the image and spirit of Siena Heights University.

The Saint Dominic Award winner is Sister John Norton, OP (class of 1957) of Adrian, Mich. Sister Norton was an educator for more than 50 years at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The Saint Dominic Award recognizes commitment to Christian education in family, school or community.

The recipient of the Outstanding Alumni Award is Harold Love (classes of 2008, 2013MA) of Clarkston, Mich. Love had a distinguished career with the Michigan State Police and is currently the owner of Harold Love and Associates in Southfield, Mich. His company focuses on behavioral health services for public safety professionals. The Outstanding Alumni Award recognizes outstanding professional achievements and/or Sister John Nortonvolunteer contributions to promote Siena positively to the community, demonstrate strong leadership characteristics and serve as significant role models for others. 

The Honorary Alumni Award winner is former Siena Heights dean and current Director of the Bachelor of Applied Science Program Norm Bukwaz of Toledo, Ohio. Bukwaz served as a faculty member, dean and in enrollment for more than four decades and continues to work in Siena Heights’ Graduate and Professional Studies Department. The Honorary Alumni Award recognizes non-alumni of Siena Heights who demonstrate exceptional commitment to and support for the mission and spirit of the University.

Receiving the Recent Graduate Award is Zach Bailey (class of 2014) of Davenport, Fla. Bailey is currently the Guest Experience Manager for Stock Replenishment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Fla. He has worked with celebrities such as Prince Harry, George Lucas and J.K. Rowling. The Recent Graduate Award Harold Loverecognizes alumni who have graduated within the past 10 years, and whose professional achievement, community involvement and/or civic commitment demonstrate dedication to Christian values and the spirit of Siena Heights University.

The Alumni Awards ceremony will be at 4 p.m. Oct. 11 in Rueckert Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
